GENERAL INFO:

The project is a single family residence located in the old residential neighborhood of “Ocean Park” on a flat 500m2 lot,  at a distance of 100 meters form one of the best beaches in the San Juan. The clients are a young couple of successful Restaurateurs with two young children; they are both well-traveled, love the ocean, and share an interest for the arts, architecture, music, and good food.  To comply with the clients’ requests of having plenty of exterior space, we raised the house on stilts and kept all the public spaces on the second floor. The bedrooms, study, and guest room were located on the third floor while the Master bedroom occupies the entire fourth floor. We generated a conceptual diagram of the project in which the house could orient itself towards the views and have a compact yet expressive vertical organization of public and private spaces. The main body of the building is oriented orthogonally on the lot while the terrace, living room and Master bedroom terrace are shifted to face north in order to have un-obstructed views of the ocean. This project incorporates several sustainable elements as design cues for its architecture: 1).The south façade is very massive and opaque to block the intense tropical sun, 2), The west façade uses roof overhangs, fixed louvered screen wall in front of windows, and planters to screen the afternoon sun while allowing the views to be appreciated. 3). The project incorporates skylights with inclined planes that serve as Photo Voltaic panels and Solar Water heater Panel mounting bases. 4). Rain water is collected for irrigation and to flush toilets. 5). The project uses exposed concrete walls that will show the materiality and texture of fly ash concrete.
